'Nautilus House' in Mexico City is one of the most colourful and original dwellings

Many people have probably wondered what life would be like living in a sea shell under the sea, and this was the inspiration behind the beautifully crafted 'Nautilus house' in Mexico.

This giant seashell house in Mexico City was built and designed by Arquitectura Organica's Javier Senosiain.

The home built features a smooth front facade met with a giant wall of colored mosaics, lighting up the living space in a stunning rainbow effect.

Inspired by the works of architects such as Antoni Gaudi - whose fantastical buildings dominate Barcelona - and American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, natural plantings and spiral staircases are located throughout the dwelling.

A young couple with two children from Mexico City said they wanted to live in something closer to nature, and the house was designed to blend in with the natural surroundings in what Senosiain likes to call 'Bio-Architecture'.

Arquitectura Organica said the goal of the project was to make the inhabitants feel like they were living inside a snail.

Or in the words of the architect, to make the home's dwellers feel 'like a mollusc moving from one chamber to another, like a symbiotic dweller of a huge fossil maternal cloister.'

Whether you think it looks like a giant snail or a seashell, these pictures show the construction is certainly something special.

Time to do your teeth kids, and can you go a bit faster than snail's pace?

Far out: The curved walls of the Nautilus house resemble a giant shell, or perhaps something out of this world. But, is that a light switch in the foreground?
