The dumbest things tourists do range from defacing historic sites and kidnapping a llama

comments

When it comes to travelling to foreign climes, it seems one thing tourists often forget to pack is their common sense.

From defacing historic sites and statues, to getting up to no good after a session on the alcohol, it seems there are many travellers who believe they can act however they wish while visiting foreign countries.

But who are the worst offenders and what are the most ridiculous escapades tourists have been caught up in on their travels? MailOnline picks out the worst offenders, from the humorous to the downright dangerous...

Taking a selfie with an angry bull

It is the modern phenomenon that makes us the star of our travel snaps - the unavoidable selfie.

But there is a time and a place for a quick self-referencing moment of camera fun.

And when you're being chased by an angry bovine in the middle of a bull run, it is not the most sensible moment to stop and take a snap.

But that's exactly what this amateur 'matador' decided to do, while running down the streets away from the rampaging animal in the French city of Bayonne.

Turning his back to snap the selfie in the video, every viewer can see what is going to happen next - except the tourist.

As he stops to take the photo, the angry bull comes running down the alleyway and charges straight into him.

Carving your initials into the Colosseum, Rome

Two American tourists were arrested for carving initials into the Colosseum in Rome.

Before they were spotted, the women, 21 and 25, were able to carve a J and an N into a brick wall on the first floor of the west side of the Colosseum.

After carving the eight-inch high letters, the women posed together for a selfie.

Police charged the women with 'aggravated damage on building of historical and artistic interest'.

They said: 'We apologise for what we did. We regret it but we did not imagine it was something so serious.

'We'll remember for a lifetime.'

Sadly for them, so will we.

Kidnapping a llama

A llama called Serge was kidnapped from a circus by a group of drunken French youths and taken on a late-night tram tour.

The five men took photos of the Thursday night trip around Bordeaux and posted them online - where they quickly went viral.

The group had left a nightclub when the passed the Italian-Franco circus and decided to explore.

One of the photos posted online shows Serge in the middle of the men as they pose for the snap in the street, while another shows him on a tram.

The men were promptly arrested, although it is unknown what the end result was.

Stripping in an airport bathroom

There was public outcry after an image of a woman going topless in the common area of the toilets at at Don Mueang international airport in Bangkok while getting changed went viral.

Although the nation has a reputation for vibrant red light areas, public nudity is strictly forbidden in Thailand and even taking one's clothes off in the relative privacy of the ladies is apparently considered by locals to be offensive.

The woman in the picture is said to have been Chinese, although this cannot be verified, and while the incident raises barely an eyebrow with many - when shared on English speaking sites the woman who took the photo was vilified more than the woman changing - the Thai government felt moved to act.

Another woman in the toilets took the above image and posted it to the Facebook page of CSI LA with the comment: 'Chinese tourists are terrible! I saw a group of Chinese tourists stripping in the ladies' room. Some were topless, some bottomless. So disgraceful!'

Posing with the world's most venomous snake, after wrenching it from coral

These are the incredible pictures of one man's remarkable encounter with the world's most dangerous snake.

Forrest Galante, with girlfriend Jessica Evans, travelled around the South Pacific and Indonesia in search of the region's most beautiful and dangerous wildlife.

There, they encountered banded sea kraits. With venom ten times stronger than a cobra's, banded sea kraits are the most toxic snakes in the world.

So naturally, it was important to pose on the beach with the snake in their arms.

Zimbabwean-born Forrest's first encounter took place while spearfishing for their dinner off a remote island in Vava'u, Tonga.

He said: 'I could not deny myself the opportunity to interact with such a beautiful sea snake.

'I repeatedly dove down and managed to free the snake from the intertwined coral head he had taken refuge in and managed to do it without being bitten.

'My approach to life and wildlife is always very hands on, so when I see something new and unusual, my first instinct is always to go catch it and have a look.

Forrest said: 'Had either of us been bitten there's no doubt we would have died.

'The poison breaks down muscle and red blood cells, clogs up the liver, eventually causing acute liver failure.

'It would be a very painful way to die and it could take two minutes to two days.'

Taking naked photos in a sacred temple

Two sisters were arrested in Cambodia for taking naked photos of each other inside the country's holy Angkor temple.

Local police said the women 'lowered their pants to their knees and took pictures of their buttocks.'

The pair were fined 1 million riel ($250) each, given six-month suspended jail sentences and were deported by bus to Thailand, reports claim.

The travellers are banned from returning to Cambodia for four years.

Stealing a penguin

Two British tourists woke the morning after the night before to find a penguin in their room.

In a scene that could have come out of the movie Hangover, the Welshmen admitted to a court on Queensland's Gold Coast that they could not remember much about what had happened the night before, when they had been drinking heavily.

Former UK marine Rhys Owen Jones, 21 and bricklayer Keri Mules, 20 both from Cardiff, were each fined $1,000 (£640) and were told that they were lucky they had not fallen into the polar bear enclosure or the shark tank when they broke into the Sea World theme park near Surfers Paradise.

The court was told that the pair, who are on working holidays in Australia and staying in a flat on the Gold Coast, drank 1.5 litres of vodka between them before deciding to have a close look at Australia's marine life.

Breaking into Sea World, they set off a fire extinguisher in the shark tank and swam with the dolphins before taking Dirk the penguin, police told the court.

Allowing a pelican to eat your head

Some people will do anything to get on film.

A video of a pelican attempting to eat a Russian women on holiday in Hurghada, Egypt appeared online and it's rather surreal.

Approaching the long-beaked bird with what appears to be a piece of banana in her hand, the woman crouches down and attempts to feed it.

The pelican decides that it wasn't interested in banana and instead has a bit of the woman's face

At first the pelican doesn't seem to be interested, but it eventually turns towards her and instead of going to eat the bit of food goes about trying to fit the lady's whole arm into its mouth.

Completely unfazed by this sudden development, the woman stays crouched by the pelican as it goes about twisting its neck in an attempt to swallow her arm.

But it appears that the taste does little to satisfy its needs and it isn't long before it returns to the woman and lunges forward to have a bite of the her head.

Talk about putting yourself in the eye of a storm!

Falling asleep on an luggage conveyor belt

An inebriated Chinese man fell asleep on a scanner at a train station - and failed to wake up when it began working.

The result was that he was given a full-body scan, which staff later released to the press.

The man had entered a train station in the Zhejiang province late at night and was reported to be drunk.

In need of a rest, he caught the station's security staff off guard and managed to get onto the conveyor belt of the baggage inspection machine for a quick nap.

But while he was dozing, the conveyor belt started up and sent him into the X-ray.

Little did the man know that as he was sleeping in his drunken stupor, his entire innards where being screened for all to see.

Hanging out your smalls - in an airport

A Chinese tourist caused a stir on social media by shamelessly hanging her underwear out to dry at Chiang Mai Airport.

Making herself completely at home in the Thailand international airport while biding her time to board a flight - the woman draped a pink bra, black underwear and a black and white printed dress across the seats in a departure lounge.

As if that didn't outrage fellow travellers enough, the lady then proceeded to lounge across six chairs, put her feet up and play on her phone much to shock of onlookers.

Social media users had a lot to say about the unusual incident.

'Doesn't their country teach the concept of manners?' one social media user commented.

Bay Suppawan said: 'This is totally crazy!' while Gunn Puntuhong asked what was wrong with people?

'Definitely rude... but it looks like her wet bikini and coverup dress she probably wore at the beach before arriving at the airport,' Loretta Tong posted.

But you can't pack away wet clothes, right?

Filming a 'pornography' video at the Egyptian Pyramids

Egyptian authorites launched an investigation after a European porn star reportedly filmed a graphic movie while visiting the pyramids.

The porn star allegedly flashed parts of her body repeatedly while on a coach trip to the tourist destination.

Speaking to the camera in the apparent 'porn' movie, the woman called Aurita complains about the views.

Driving past the pyramids, the 'actress' claims 'this f****** sucks. What is there to look at?'

'It really sucks, even our resorts are better.'

The actress appears on the trailer wearing a tight pair of blue hotpants and a yellow top. She continually flashes various parts of her body towards the camera, even with fellow tourists in the background.

Posing for a selfie next to a crocodile

Photos and video appeared on social media of two young women smiling, posing and snapping photos with large crocodiles at Darwin's Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, in Australia.

In the video, a woman can be seen to be unfazed by the beast and takes nonchalant snaps mere metres from it's jaws.

The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory have issued a direct warning to those wanting to snap a selfie with a crocodile.

A selfie posted on Instagram shows a young women a mere metre from a crocodile at Fogg Dam in Darwin

They have warned the public to be 'crocwise' and keep a safe distance of at least 15 metres.

The Northern Territory is notorious for its freshwater and saltwater crocodile population, with certain areas averaging 15 crocodiles per kilometre.

Salt water crocodiles can grow to five metres in length, weigh 450 kilograms and last year killed more people than any other year with the 'freshies' remaining more timid and fearful.

However, this does not rule out the possibility of an attack by a freshwater crocodile, especially with passerby's getting too close for comfort.
