We've all left a phone on the back seat of a taxi before. It's a sure fire way to ruin your day or night but at least you can call it from a friend's number to reclaim it.

But what would you do if you left your baby behind? Or cremation ashes? That's the conundrum facing Australians, according to a new survey.

Taxi app ingogo conducted a survey online with more than 1,000 respondents to find out what items people had left behind in a cab.

The results range from the normal to the sublime and the ridiculous.

While some people left predictable apparel behind such as wallets, laptops and shoes, other items included artificial limbs, sex toys and even $10,000 (£5,500) cash.

Top of the list of oddest items left in a taxi was a baby, followed by false teeth, live animals including a chicken and duck, a bird, a frog, a mouse and a dog, blow up animals and STI results.

'We were surprised by the results at how many unusual items Australians have left in taxis,' said founder of ingogo Hamish Petrie.

'There were some things you can only laugh at but also some rather disturbing items and things to be cautionary about,' he said.

Hamish added that of items that were left behind, 54 per cent were returned to their owners - hopefully including the baby.

Ingogo's research also found that the worst culprits for leaving things in taxis are people aged between 25-34 years old, and 28 per cent of men have left things behind compared to 18 per cent of women.
