Pre-selfie generation captured posing for hilarious holiday snaps next to famous American landmarks
comments
In a time before selfies and smart phone apps designed to make everything - including ourselves - more beautiful, holiday photos were a little less polished.
In the early 1980s, photographer Roger Minick captured the crowds at famous American landscapes such as Yosemite National park, Yellowstone National Park and the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington DC.
He was interested in the transience of families seeming to merge into the landscape, then to vanish once they had captured the perfect snapshot.
His photographs showcase the bizarre, charming and sometimes comical moments now lost - thanks to the emergence of digital technology, and the ability to edit our photographs.
Most of his shots were taken in moments, in the brief time which hurried travelers gave him, before enjoying the sights.
