Parents not controlling their children is top gripe for mums and dads travelling with little ones, a new survey reveals.

More than one in ten (12 per cent) of parents polled said other people not controlling their young ones was their biggest annoyance when staying in a hotel.

The survey also found that 7 per cent of parents were annoyed by intolerant guests and another 7 per cent were irritated by intolerant staff.

A lack of child-friendly menus or poor quality food were also a contentious issue with 5 per cent expressing disapproval.

When it came to hotel facilities, 60 per cent of mums and dads thought hotels should provide menus for children, while 55 per cent wanted special offers allowing children to go free.

Some respondents pointed out the issue of rooms often only having showers, not baths, making them unsuitable for small children, and mealtimes being inflexible. 

Also high on the list of requirements were family-friendly TV channels (41 per cent), a games room or children's club (41 per cent), and activity packs (39 per cent).

The survey was conducted by conducted by QHotels and YouGov and polled more than 800 parents with children aged 12 and under.

Claire Rowland, Director of Marketing at QHotels, said: 'The results of this survey show how important family-friendly staff and facilities are. Hotels have to be prepared to go the extra mile to make guests' stays as stress-free and enjoyable as possible, particularly if they're travelling with children.'
