The Castell de Celra is the sort of structure quaint fairytales are built around, with a 1,000-year-old tower at its heart - and the castle in Spain could be yours to own for a cool £1.5million.

Found midway between Barcelona and the French border, the listed historic monument it has seven en suite bedrooms, two kitchens and a barrel-vaulted dining room and a deluxe wine cellar, while its classic tower has been turned into a library area.

The epic building can be found just 30 minutes from the stunning stretches of Costa Brava beaches and boasts 360-degree panoramic views as far as the Pyrenees mountains.

Should the buyer ever be called upon to fend off invading forces, the castle is set high on a hill and has walls that are a tough-to-breach 1.2 metres (4ft) thick. These features also offer the modern resident stunning views and keep the castle cool in summer.

As would be expected of such a property, there's a walled garden, a private pool and  a number of other terraces that offer ample and varied space for entertaining, with the extensively blooming lavender ensuring a sweet scent in the air.

While privacy and seclusion are an option, nearby Girona (15 minutes drive) is a gorgeous city boasting three Michelin-starred restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, which was voted the world's best 2013 by Restaurant magazine, while the village of Celra's bakery, butcher, fishmonger and its other markets are walking distance.
