Hugh Laurie delayed by Serbian border official copying his passport as SOUVENIR

Hugh Laurie almost lost his passport while trying to cross into Serbia - after an official kept hold of the document so he could photocopy it as a souvenir.

The 54-year-old actor, who won two Golden Globes for his role as Dr Gregory House on the American medical drama House, tweeted about the hilarious incident as he toured with his blues group Copper Bottom Band.

The actor-turned singer wrote: 'Crossed into Serbia but had to turn back an hour later. Border guard had kept my passport to make a photocopy as a souvenir. Smashing!!'

The star was reportedly allowed into the country but was told he would have to wait to collect his passport an hour later.

It was only when he did so that he realised the border official was clearly a fan and had taken a copy for himself.

After tweeting about the humorous incident, Laurie was bombarded with responses and his tweet was 'favourited' more than 2,000 times.

Among his many fan responses was a comment from @Brittellyaddict, which read: 'That's what you get for being so bloody talented.'

User @BabalooBlue added: 'Did he ask for an autograph as validation, too?'

And a rather worried @picard25 commented: 'Soon there will be hundreds of Serbian Hugh Lauries. Can the world survive?'

Laurie is best known for his acting skills that started as one half of the Fry and Laurie double act and then moved onto his roles in Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster and then the protagonist of the TV show House, for which he received two Golden Globe awards, two Screen Actors Guild awards and six Emmy nominations.

Although he was listed in the 2011 Guinness World Records as the most watched leading man on television and was one of the highest-paid actors in a television drama, earning £250,000 per episode in House, he has often said that music is an equal passion and he is currently on a world tour with his band in between acting jobs.
