It's flower power over horse power! AA does the hippy hippy shake with new 'retro rescue' vans to add a festive feel to summer

If your car breaks down and your rescue team seems a bit more laid-back than you normally expect, take note - the AA is going all hippy-dippy this summer.

Five of its traditional yellow vans are being given a 'Flower Power' makeover, as this one spied just after its new  paint-job but before its official launch on Wednesday testifies.

Dubbed 'Summer Saviours' the five retro rescue vans will be on patrol near festivals and events the length and breadth of Britain, from Glastonbury to Goodwood and Glasgow.

AA members who see these vans on the road and contact the head office via Twitter will be entered into a prize draw to win five pairs of tickets for horseracing at Glorious Goodwood

But the AA insists there will be no return to long hair and flared trousers – the rescue crews' uniforms will stay traditional.

An AA spokesman said, 'To help keep the nation's spirits high this summer, five AA patrols will be cheering up the roads by swapping their regular AA vans for limited edition Flower Power AA vans.

'Patrols driving these vans, decorated in a customised livery, throughout the summer will serve members in Scotland, Northern England, Midlands, Wales, South West, and South East.'

AA members  who spot the vans and let the AA know, - via Twitter or retweeted mentions of the vans - will be entered into a draw to win five pairs of tickets for horseracing at 'Glorious Goodwood'.

The AA's Summer of Love flower power  comes as 20 million people are set  to take a driving holiday this summer.

Almost two thirds (62 per cent) of AA members  surveyed said they are planning  to take a summer holiday this year involving driving a car either in the UK or abroad. Of those, half (49 per cent) will be in the UK.

An AA spokesman said; 'Our latest AA/Populus research shows that the hot summer last year has impacted on people's holiday plans for this year with more people planning to give our weather the benefit of the doubt. '

A quarter of people (24 per cent) say that because the weather was so much better last summer they are more optimistic about the weather and so are more likely to holiday in the UK this year.

This rose to a third (31 per cent) amongst young people (18-24),  perhaps indicates youthful optimism and a greater desire to save money than older people.'

Younger people (11 per cent) are also the most likely to be considering a holiday in the UK because of the World Cup.

Those in Scotland are the least likely to say the World Cup will make them holiday in the British Isles.(6 per cent). By contrast, those  in London and the West Midlands were the most likely (10 per cent).

Nearly four out of ten (38 per cent)  of drivers saying they think they will be driving more in the UK this summer than last. And half of people (50 per cent) say the good weather last year means they will be more likely to be taking more day trips and short breaks this summer.

AA chief executive Chris Jansen,  said, 'We estimate that a record number of twenty million drivers will be hitting the roads in their cars as part of their summer holidays both at home and abroad.

'We're here to help make this summer the best yet even if it's just by raising a smile by seeing one of our flower power patrol vans, or trying to win a campervan. Our patrols will be out in force from Glastonbury to Goodwood and Glasgow to ensure all drivers have a great summer.'
