Shropshire is the cheapest self-catering holiday destination

If you want to holiday on a budget, then Shropshire is the best spot for a self-catering trip this summer.

But you'll need deep pockets if you want to holiday at beach favourites Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, which were found to be the most expensive destinations for a self-catering break, according to TripAdvisor.

Shropshire topped the list as the most affordable destination for a one-week rental between June and August.

Two-bedroom rental accommodation, one meal at a restaurant and basic groceries came to a total of £566 in Shropshire, according to the survey.

And Shropshire certainly has a lot of attractions, from Shrewsbury - where Charles Darwin was born - to a scattering of other pretty market towns and rolling countryside and dramatic hills and moorlands.

Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland took second place in the survey, with the same goods costing £568.

Lincolnshire took third place, with a week's accommodation, groceries and a meal out costing £569, while Derbyshire cost £570 and North Yorkshire £627.

The most expensive destination in the survey was Cornwall, where a week-long trip cost £854, followed by Dorset (£834) and Devon (£826).

Taking just the accommodation into account, Dumfries and Galloway is the least-expensive destination, at £450.

In contrast, the accommodation part of a self-catering week in Cornwall would set a family back £745.

TripAdvisor said that the north of England and Scotland largely dominated the the most-affordable destination list, with the three most-expensive locations being in south west England.

The average cost of a family dinner out (two courses each for four people, plus a bottle of house wine and two soft drinks) starts from £82 in Lincolnshire and goes up to £120 in Devon. The cost of basic groceries showed little variation across the destinations.

'Self-catering holidays are a great way to keep costs down without compromising on quality,' said TripAdvisor spokesman James Kay.

'Holiday rental houses, apartments and cottages come with the privacy and space of home – like gardens and full-sized kitchens – and even in the most expensive destinations in our list, a week's accommodation is still very affordable.'
