A boutique hotel chain had to draft in extra security after opening in Glasgow to deal with drunken guests.

The chairman of the citizenM hotel chain admitted that opening his first UK hotel in Scotland's second city had run into problems due to drunken guests trying to party at the hotel.

Rattan Chadha claimed the Glasgow base wasn't attracting the kind of high-end traveller he was aiming for and admitted that guests, mainly from England and Scotland, 'like to drink'.

He went on to confess that when it first opened, the hotel had to draft in extra security after guests tried to continue the party back at the hotel once the bars had shut.

The businessman already had two CitizenM hotels in Amsterdam when he decided to open one in the UK and opted for Glasgow after he was priced out of London.

Speaking to a business magazine, Mr Chadha said: 'London prices were sky-high, so when we found a prime place in downtown Glasgow, we said "it's not ideal, but let's try." It's the number one hotel in Glasgow, but it doesn't attract out target customers.

'Most people come from England or other parts of Scotland, and like to drink.

'When the bars close, they bring the party back to the hotel. That's not what we intended.

'Every evening, we have someone falling down the stairs. We've had to hire extra security.'

The hotel opened in 2010 and has since become a popular spot in the city for its concept of affordable luxury.

The chain states that it wants to attract 'a smart new breed of international traveler, the type who crosses continents the way others cross streets.'

It adds: 'This includes the weekenders, the suits, fashion baggers and affair havers. The explorers, adventurers and dreamers.'

The hotel is the third highest-ranked hotel in Glasgow on Tripadvisor, with former guests praising its decor.

A spokeswoman for the firm told the Sunday Herald that the comments by Mr Chadha were taken out of context and actually referred to incidents that happened in 2010, when the hotel first opened.

She said: 'He never actually said Glasgow was a mistake, as we are very deeply rooted in Glasgow. The hotel is well received here and we are very happy with the Glasgow property.'
