Travellers hoping to jet off for the Bank Holiday weekend were forced to queue out of Terminal 1 and into the car park at Manchester Airport this morning.

Passengers branded the delays 'a complete farce' as they were forced to queue just to get into the terminal building.

An airport spokesman blamed the 'sheer volume' of holidaymakers for the delays, which occurred at all three of the airport's terminals.

Angry travellers took to Twitter to vent their frustration as they queued to get through security.

Louise Bailey posted: 'Omg in the longest queue I've ever seen for security at #manchesterairport #bankholiday glad I set off early!! Sort it out manchester!!'

Fee Stewart added: 'Massive hold up @manairport security this morning .. Yeah great! Its so long I am out of the airport and outside now!'

Chris Wood tweeted: '@manairport terminal one queuing to access security is a joke no staff controlling it a complete farce'.

Mike said: 'Quarter mile queue out into carparks @manairport just to get through to departures. Never flying from here again #joke'.

An irate traveller, who did not want to be named, said: 'I've literally never seen it like this before, the queues are incredible. I think it's just the sheer weight of people going away.'

A spokesman for the aiport told Manchester Evening News that the sheer volume of passengers trying to get away for the Bank Holiday had caused the problem.

They added: 'It's one of the first days of the summer season and a lot of the flights are full.'
