Tourists are being warned over a stretch of beach after a 15-year-old boy got stuck in quicksand.

The teenager had been trying to retrieve a ball when he became trapped up to his knees at Arnside pier in Cumbria.

The emergency services were called after the boy was unable to get free from the sand.

It took crews 15 minutes to save the victim, who has not been named, on Saturday.

An RNLI spokeswoman told the BBC that beachgoers had been warned 'to always be vigilant on the sands'.

She added that the boy was not believed to be injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

It follows an incident last year in which a couple were found shouting for help after sinking knee- and waist-deep in quicksand at another beach in Cumbria.

Sparking a full-scale emergency rescue, it took 45 minutes to free the man, 46, and woman, 25.

The pair had been near a sign that reads: 'DANGER Beware fast rising tides, quicksands, hidden channels.'
