The top 50 things to do in Britain at least once in your lifetime

According to research, half of Britons have added 'travel' to their bucket list, but exploring doesn't have to involve trekking America's Grand Canyon or meeting Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka.

One internet company has come up with the '50 British Things To Do Before You Die' a list of the best activities for the patriotic - and cash-strapped - traveller.

The bucket list includes everything from from seeing Tower Bridge being raised to watching the sun come up over Stonehenge on midsummer's day or following a Wainwright walk in the Lake District.

But the number one British bucket list experience is the simple pleasure of enjoying fish and chips while sat on a pier at a traditional seaside resort.

The list, created by Ask Jeeves, is based on a survey of British adults about the experiences they thought everyone should enjoy in the UK.

Forget swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean, spotting whales off the Welsh coast made it into second place, followed by a night at the Proms in London's Albert Hall.

Visiting the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and travelling Scotland's dramatic West Coast by rail also make it into the top 10, along with a ride on the London Eye and watching a Shakespeare play in Stratford-upon-Avon.

For foodies, the list suggests dining at a prestigious Gordon Ramsay restaurant to eating haggis on Burns Night or simply trying a deep fried Mars Bar.

And where in the world offers the kind of musical experiences available in Blighty, from the Glastonbury festival to the Proms to Morris Dancing?

For the sporting it suggests holding the FA Cup, seeing a British tennis star play at Wimbledon, or lining the streets to cheer on runners in the London Marathon.

Alternatively, for something different but still very British, there is always the unique atmosphere of a world darts championships, which are held annually in the UK.

Uniquely British pursuits also include seeing a pantomime to having a pint in the Rover's Return - the pub in Coronation Street - as part of a guided tour of the soap's TV set.

'Most of these bucket lists include the kind of ambitions that look wonderful on paper but are out of reach for millions of us.

'Instead, we thought it would be good to look closer to home to find the kind of experiences Brits think everyone should try at least once.'
