One in five Brits thinks Big Ben is in AUSTRALIA - and half don't know the Colosseum is in Rome

One in five Brits is unable to place the location of Big Ben – believing the landmark is in Australia not London, according to a new survey.

More than half of people questioned did not know the Colosseum is in Rome, and 11 per cent thought the Sydney Opera House is in Italy.

They also struggled to pinpoint the location of other famous attractions, with 35 per cent admitting to not knowing the Taj Mahal is in India, while 39 per cent were unable to identify that Christ the Redeemer is in Rio, Brazil.

The Hotels.com findings also revealed 20 per cent of the 2,000 Brits surveyed could not place Big Ben's location, with more than 10 per cent believing it to be in Australia.

 

While 58 per cent of people are unable to pinpoint Mount Vesuvius in Italy.

The Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty were the most recognised landmarks by Brits with 90 per cent and 80 per cent respectively able to place them correctly on a world map.

Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com said: 'It's interesting to see so many Brits unable to pinpoint many of the world's most visited landmarks.

'Visiting these iconic landmarks is the highlight and focal point of so many people's travels, it's baffling to find so many are unaware of their locations, perhaps we may all need to visit more!'
