An Amsterdam bench which featured in the summer tearjerker The Fault in Our Stars has gone missing.

The seat in the Leidsegracht district was used in an emotional scene between the teenagers lovers of the film, Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus (Ansel Elgort).

City authoritites admitted the bench has actually been missing for up to a month, but its absence was only noticed recently.

Instead of the key film prop, a simple flowerpot has been left in the empty space.

'It's a bit embarrassing, because we do keep good track of them,' city spokesman Stephan van der Hoek told The Hollywood Reporter.

'But it's gone all right.'

There is still no sign of the key item, which could well have become a tourist attraction in its own right following the success of the summer blockbuster.

Heartthrob: Ansel posted a link to the story about the missing bench on his Instagram account, writing: 'Lol'

But not everyone is disappointed. Heartthrob Ansel, seemed to see the funny side of the green bench's abduction.

He posted a news article about its mysterious disappearance to his Instagram account on Wednesday, captioning it simply: 'Lol'.

Fans of John Green's heart-rending novel and its subsequent film adaptation agreed.

'I'm still laughing over the fact the green bench in Amsterdam used in tfios [The Fault in Our Stars] is missing,' one tweeted.

Another put it succinctly: 'This is why we can't have nice things.'

The bench should be replaced within weeks, as the city work's department has a replacement in stock.
