Maybe he should leave jokes to the experts and stick to what he knows best.

A US pilot's comedy routine failed to impress passengers on board a busy Southwest Airlines plane as he attempted to entertain them before take-off.

In a video called 'Wacky Captain' uploaded to YouTube, filmed by a traveller, the male pilot takes to the mic with a string of banter, as the paperwork for the flight is prepared.

Bad jokes: The Southwest Airlines' pilot's on board comedy routine is filmed by a passenger

The unnamed captain starts by saying, 'Actually, I have been here all week', before beginning a joke about I Dream Of Jeannie - the US TV sitcom from the Fifties.

He says: 'I found a slot machine I fell in love with, it's called I Dream Of Jeannie.

'You put a dollar in the slot machine and the first thing it says in Barbara Eden's voice is "Hello master".

'I took a hundred dollar bill out of my pocket and said "change", and sat there one at a time ... "hello master, hello master".

'Of course, my wife came up to me and said, "Honey, I'll call you master", And I said "you will?" and she said, "Sure, give me a hundred dollars".'

Not so funny: The pilot's jokes were themed around Fifties sitcom I Dream Of Jeannie starring Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman

As a passenger groans, he says: 'There goes the shoes.'

Undeterred, the pilot continues, telling a story about how his wife buys three pairs of shoes at a time - another gag that falls flat on its face.

He then goes on to tell the passengers about the I Dream Of Jeannie 'bonus' round - managing to get a coin in Jeannie's bottle on the slot machine.

'Every time you got a bottle, Jeannie would say "yes" and each time would be a little more excitement in her voice. So if you got three bottles, it would be "yes, yes, yes" - I prayed for the fourth bottle.'

To which the man who is filming the footage raises the can of drink in his hand.

The captain adds: 'Then when you're all done losing your money, in true fashion, you cash out, and she says "bye bye now".'

He finishes up saying: 'Welcome on board.'
