More than half of travellers believe that sleeping on the plane is the best way to counteract jetlag, while 15 per cent change their watch to the new timezone in advance to help avoid tiredness.
Eating particular foods, relying on sleeping pills and travelling business class all feature among the top five jetlag-busting myths, according to research by Icelandair.
But there are actually a host of other ways to combat tiredness, ranging from eating protein in the day to promote alertness and drinking caffeine before a 45-minute nap to ensure you wake up with a buzz.
This handy infographic combines all the advice in one place, claiming that jetlag lasts longer when travelling east than when flying west, and that early morning sunshine tends to delay your body clock, helping to regulate the effects of travel.
The airline also recommends travellers eat carbohydrates in the evening to help make them more drowsy and even consider fast days which can deplete the liver's store of carbohydrates, reportedly making it easier to restore the body clock.
The infographic also highlights the best planes to use to help combat jetlag. The Boeing 757 is known as one of the quietest in the world, ensuring a good night's sleep, while the Boeing 787 Dreamliner uses LED lighting to simulate daytime and the night sky to help eliminate jetlag.
The Airbus A380 is pressurised around 3,000ft lower than other commercial planes, which is also supposed to help reduce tiredness.
