Could there be a better way to watch a film than curled under a blanket with a bottle of wine, overlooking a city or ocean as the sun goes down?

From screens set up in the surrounds of ancient amphitheatres to projectors and bean bags on the beach in Spain, open-air cinemas are growing in popularity in cities and unusual locations around the world.

MailOnline Travel has found some of quirkiest outdoor cinemas where holidaymakers or locals can watch Hollywood blockbusters or classics under the stars.

Arguably one of the most atmospheric and unforgettable cinema experiences has to the outdoor cinema at The Amante in Ibiza. 

Filmgoers lounge on cushions by the ocean, with the sound of waves lapping gently in the background, at a magical beach grove lit with fairy lights.

Could there be a better surrounding to watch some of the most epic films than the ancient surroundings of a Roman amphitheatre?

Pula Arena hosts the oldest Croatian film festival in the summer months, and as well as hosting public screenings, awards are also given out in the incredible location.

The festival debuted 1954 and within a few years it became the centrepiece event of the Yugoslav film industry, with the first national awards being presented in 1957.

Australians and visitors can watch some of the best films, with one of the most impressive skyline backdrops behind, at the St George OpenAir Cinema in Sydney.

This cinema has stadium seating, and even has a harbour bar, so guests can sip cocktails as they sit under the stars.

The latest line-up included The Imitation Game, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, and Birdman.

Fortress and Riverbad Cinemas - DokuFest, Prizren, Kosovo

Dokufest was created in 2002 by a group of friends who started with almost no funding. 

It has since developed into a cultural event that attracts international and regional artists and audiences and is set at some visually stunning locations, such as the Castle Theatre which is built on a platform on the mountain top with the castle ramparts above. 

Also turning the idea of the outdoor cinema on its head is the Riverbad Cinema at the festival where guests can perch outdoors and look across the river at films featured in the August film festival.

Films are screened throughout the eight-day festival along with numerous programs, activities and workshops.

There is also the opportunity to have a say in what is shown in the courtyard, with a public vote opening.

The website even says guests are free to cosy up and kiss in their car, if they are looking for a nostalgic high school experience.
