Colorado cannabis hotel chain complete in with communal smoking paraphernalia

The world's first cannabis-themed hotels have opened in Colorado.

Bud & Breakfast guesthouses are geared around what's known as 420 cannabis culture - a term used by marijuana users to identify themselves to each other, denoting a lifestyle choice of smoking joints at 4.20pm and 4.20am.

Possession and consumption of the drug is legal in Colorado for over 21s, and while publicly smoking it, or smoking it inside public buildings is illegal, some hotels have a more relaxed attitude to these laws than others.

Guests are offered the use of smoking paraphernalia, marijuana healing massages and a happy hour that starts at 4.20pm.

And the hotels serve up what they call a Wake & Bake breakfast which, along with coffee and croissants, comes with a hit of Sativa strain marijuana, known medically for promoting energy.

The man behind the chain is former lawyer Joel Schneider, who worked in New York, before moving to Colorado.

'Our concept and core values makes it like no other lodging facility in the world,' he said.

The first hotel - the six-bedroom Adagio in Denver - opened on April 10 2014 and has gained huge popularity in just over a year.

Thanks to its Adagio's success, another four-bed site has opened - the Silverthorne - offering closer access to Colorado's famous ski slopes.

Schneider, 55, said: 'Our guests have been quite diverse ranging in age from 25 to 75-years-old.

'When I first moved here, I was living in a downtown hotel. I had to smoke in the bathroom with the shower on and blowing the smoke into the toilet with a towel under my room door.

'The experience left a lot to be desired so I decided to start my own and started knocking on the doors of bed and breakfasts located in Denver and the rest is history.

'There are no places in the world like the two Bud & Breakfasts.

'We have had guests from as far as Japan, New Zealand, England, just because we offer something unique.'

As well as providing guests a space to smoke, the hotels partner with dispensaries across the state - which legalised the possession of marijuana on November 6 2012 - and offer coupons and vouchers to purchase cannabis.

Due to the hotels' popularity, Schneider is looking to open an all-inclusive 172 acre ranch.

He said: 'Currently we are working on Canna-Camp, which will be located in south west Colorado.

'It's going to be an all-inclusive experience where guests will be introduced to a number of cannabis related events such as horticulture classes, cooking with cannabis and so on.

'The property is located adjacent to a large lake which will afford our guests all water sports, in addition there is a pool, hot tub on the property.'
