An easyJet flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Germany after smoke was reported in the cockpit, said passengers.

The plane was diverted to Cologne Bonn Airport about 30 minutes after it departed London Gatwick Airport for Paphos, Cyprus.

A passenger said people on board realised there was a problem when the senior flight attendant was called into the cockpit.

The passenger said emergency procedures were employed thereafter and the Airbus A320 made a rapid descent from 33,000ft in about 15 minutes.

The passenger said the plane was forced to land after the captain and co-pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

Flight U25455 was near the Belgium-Luxembourg border when the emergency was declared and it changed course towards the airport between the German cities of Cologne and Bonn.

Photos snapped by passengers show the plane surrounded by emergency vehicles, including several fire trucks, after it landed at about 5:15pm local time yesterday.
