Famed for its rugged coastline and place in World War II history, Jersey has been named the sixth best island in Europe, finishing ahead of some of Britons' favourite holiday hot spots.

The largest of the Channel Islands narrowly missed out on a top five spot in TripAdvisor's annual ranking, but edged the Spanish islands of Mallorca and Tenerife to claim its place in Europe's top 10 with its highest ranking ever.

Santorini in Greece was named the best island in Europe, while Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, was voted best in the world in the website's Travellers Choice Awards for 2015.
