Professor Cary Cooper, distinguished professor of organisational psychology and health, from the University of Lancaster said: 'It's the busiest time of year at work in the months leading up to the festive season and the cold, dreary weather and dark evenings make that summer break taken in July or August feel like it was a very long time ago.
'Throw in the stress of Christmas shopping and entertaining, as well as negotiating sometimes tricky family relationships, and it is perhaps unsurprising that we need something to look forward to and want to book a holiday.'

Teletext Holidays Marketing Director Tom Sainsbury said: 'Last year we witnessed unprecedented demand for beach holidays on Christmas Day.
'Despite our best efforts to predict how many staff we'd need, we just couldn't cope. So this year we're incentivising staff to come in and man the phones.
'Crafty holiday shoppers will sneak away from the in-laws to get in there first and bag their place in the sun. This year we're ready.'
