Men are getting in touch with their romantic side as research reveals the most popular present they will buy their partners this Christmas is a surprise trip away.

Women are more likely to buy clothing, followed by gadgets and experience days, as their presents of choice.

A poll of UK adults in relationships has revealed what gifts men and women plan to buy their partners this Christmas; with women spending more on their partners than men do.

The gift most men say that they plan to buy for their partner is a surprise trip away somewhere (UK or abroad), whilst women are more likely to purchase clothing as a present.

Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said: 'A surprise trip away makes for a great gift, but a lot of planning often has to go into it.

For example, contacting your partner's place of work if you're planning to take them away during work time and packing their case for them if you aren't telling them until the last minute.

'It seems that a lot of women will be surprised with this kind of gift this Christmas, if our results are anything to go by.

'Women seem to spend more than men when it comes to Christmas gifts for their partners, but perhaps that shows how frugal some men are.'

Online travel agency sunshine.co.uk conducted the research to see how holidays ranked in terms of the gifts given and received in relationships.

The 2,178 people aged 18 and over from around the UK, all of whom were in a relationship and celebrated Christmas, took part in the study and answered questions about their gift shopping habits.

When asked, 'What do you plan to give to your partner this year as a Christmas present?' and told to select more than one answer if they were planning to get more than one gift, only seven per cent of women and 11 per cent of men said 'nothing at all'.

These people were asked why, to which the majority of women (42 per cent) said they couldn't afford to buy anything, whilst 31 per cent of the men said they 'don't know where to start'.

Women said they'd get their partner an average of six gifts, whilst men said they'd get their partner an average of three gifts.

However, the female respondents said they'd spend an average of £270.00 on their partner, whilst men planned to spend an average of £140.00 on their partner for Christmas.
