3G-enabled cars launch in South Africa so holidaymakers can share photos instantly

Phone-addicted tourists who don't want to wait to post their holiday snaps online can now take 3G-enabled city tours.

An entrepreneur in South Africa has started offering Cape Town tours in wifi-equipped vehicles, so holidaymakers can post their photos to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as soon as they have taken them.

Most travellers rely on using expensive wif in their hotel rooms to avoid extortionate data roaming charges, meaning there is a delay between taking photos and posting them online.

Shaheed Ebrahim, 37, came up with the idea after struggling to keep his children entertained on long car journeys. The former banker would give his children iPads loaded with games, but he realised the majority of them actually needed 3G to function properly.

The Cape Town local also loved giving tours to friends and family when they came to visit and when he decided to make being a tour guide his job, he combined the two ideas, so that his customers could upload their pictures in real-time.

Mr Ebrahim told CNN: 'We live in the technology age where people expect to exchange information instantly.

'They want to upload their pictures on Facebook and Instagram in real-time, and I often host bloggers who wish to publish articles and pictures immediately.'

The Escape to the Cape tours, which take in iconic sights like Table Mountain and the colourful Bo Kaap district, took two years to become profitable.

Mr Ebrahim won the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2012, but is only now turning a profit and working on developing the business further.

He also wants to offer tours streamed online so family and friends can joined their loved ones virtually as they travel around Cape Town.
