If you want to save money on your holiday, you should opt for a bed-and-breakfast break over an all-inclusive trip, according to new research.

Those taking seven-night B&B trips to most of the top European resort areas are forking out less than those on week-long all-inclusive deals, the survey from Post Office Travel Money revealed.

Comparing prices in July and August at popular resorts B&B breaks came out cheaper than all-inclusive resorts, even when evening meals and drinks are included.

A week-long B&B break for two in late July 2014 on the Algarve, is more than £300 cheaper than a two-person, seven-night all-inclusive break in the same area.

On the same basis, a B&B trip to Ayia Napia in Cyprus in mid-August 2014 is £342 less expensive than an all-inclusive one.

The survey also found that those visiting European all-inclusive resorts expected less for their money than those on long-haul all-inclusive trips.

The poll found that only 20 per cent of European hotels included branded alcohol drinks in their all-inclusive packages and just 15 per cent offered complimentary mini-bars compared with 50 per cent of long-haul hotels for both of these items.

In addition, 80 per cent of long-haul holidaymakers had complimentary internet access, compared with 65 per cent in Europe.

And just 20 per cent included a la carte meals in Europe whereas 55 per cent did so in destinations further afield.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, said: 'Our research showed that European resorts include far less in their all-inclusive packages so it is important for holidaymakers to budget carefully and do their homework to find out how much meals and other extras might add to their trip.'
