He is known as an animal lover, is devoted to his two dogs and even rescued a puppy that he found running in the road this weekend.

But that hasn't stopped Andy Murray's hotel advertising local hunting trips on its website, prompting complaints from animal rights activists.

The Wimbledon champion's luxury hotel, Cromlix, advertised the chance to go hunting in the local area on its website, drawing the wrath of the campaign group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta).

The organisation sent a letter to the star comparing the idea of killing animals as a fun activity with murdering his beloved dogs Maggie May and Rusty.

The tennis star's pets have previously been photographed sporting his London 2012 Olympic medals and his dog Maggie May has her own Twitter account, run by Murray's girlfriend Kim Sears.

In an open letter, Kirsty Henderson, campaign co-ordinator for Peta, wrote: 'The idea of hunting cats and dogs, such as your beloved Maggie May and Rusty, would rightly make most of us sick, and yet the animals listed on the Cromlix website, alongside the best times of year to kill them, have exactly the same capacity to feel pain and suffer.'

She added: 'Will you please extend your compassion to the beautiful and sensitive wild animals who live in the vicinity of the Cromlix Hotel by refusing to promote killing as an activity to guests of your establishment?'

A spokesman for Murray's management company, 77, said references to hunting were removed from the Cromlix website earlier this month and the activity was never offered on the hotel's grounds.

The British number one was praised by Peta last year when it was revealed the menu at the five-star hotel would be foie gras-free.

Celebrity chef and Le Gavroche owner Albert Roux, who runs the restaurant Chez Roux at the hotel, confirmed that foie gras would not be sold.

He said: 'I'm totally, totally in agreement of not serving foie gras due to the cruelty inflicted on the animals.'

Cromlix was bought by Murray for £1.8million last February and was extensively refurbished ahead of its opening in April, shortly before being named Scottish hotel of the year.

The Victorian mansion features 10 bedrooms and five suites each of which is named after a great Scot, including Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Robert Burns and even fellow sporting legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Chris Hoy.

Guests can expect to pay up to £585 a night for a room at the hotel during peak season.

The five-star retreat is set in 34 acres of secluded woodland and gardens just three miles from the Murray's home town of Dunblane.

Several of the suites feature hand-painted freestanding gold, silver and copper baths and the rooms' 32in televisions screens are disguised as mirrors.

The hotel is being managed for the British number one by Inverlochy Castle Management International and is already fully booked for the Ryder Cup, which is being staged a short drive away at Gleneagles later this year.
