The most 'liked' airports in the world according to Facebook

Travelling through airports is synonymous with delays, cancellations, spending too much in Duty Free and jetlag. But it seems the world's most important hubs are certainly not short of fans.

Travel website Skift has discovered which are the most popular airports in the world, judged by how many travellers 'like' them on Facebook.

And while two European hubs make it into the top five, British airports are nowhere to be seen.

The most popular airport in the world according to Facebook is Changi Airport in Singapore.

Famous for the world's first airport butterfly garden, not to mention a cactus garden and orchid garden and koi pond, perhaps it is no surprise it has 368,289 'likes' on Facebook.

Changi was streets ahead of the second most popular airport, Schiphol Amsterdam, which is a popular European hub for changing flights when travelling long haul.

With 258,830 likes, the airport has double the number of fans that Heathrow has, which didn't even make it into the top five, despite being one of the busiest airports in the world.

Celebrity favourite LAX - Los Angeles International Airport - came in second place with 231,962 likes, while Frankfurt Airport boasted 202,054 likes.

In fifth place came Dubai, with 196,792 likes. The Emirate will be pleased to have sneaked into the top five as plans have been revealed to make Dubai the world's most visited city by 2020.

In comparison, UK airports have much fewer fans on Facebook.

While Heathrow has 127,905 'likes' - putting it about 70,000 behind Dubai - Gatwick has just half that amount with 50,949 in total, placing it behind Manchester Airport, which has 66,803.

Luton boasted 45,836 'likes', while Birmingham and Liverpool John Lennon were also among Britain's most popular airports, with 25,476 and 25,285 'likes' respectively.

Glasgow and Edinburgh weren't too far behind, with 19,826 and 15,581 'likes' each, while Bristol has 15,432, but Stansted trailed with just 5,281.

The airports that made the list use Facebook to their advantage, posting old photos, giving updates about construction projects and creating their own photo campaigns to encourage travellers to interact with them.
